We all know that the Summer months are full of all sorts of activities; camping, swimming, boating, and hiking to name a few. We put together a few easy steps to prepare you to keep your dentures in tip-top shape during your adventures this Summer.
- Make a Denture Care Kit
This kit should include:
- Denture case*
- Denture brush
- Dental cleaner (ie: soaking tablets or dish soap)
- Denture adhesive
- Topical healing agent (ie: Oxy Fresh gel)
- Wash cloth (to line the sink when cleaning)
- Small water-proof bag to place items in
*Ensure that your denture case is sturdy enough to withstand some force. Whether you’re camping in a tent or staying in a hotel, when your dentures are out of your mouth they are likely to break if stepped on or knocked off of a counter. Placing them in a sturdy container will protect them from such events.
- Be Aware when Taking Part in Rigorous Activities
For the most part dentures are held in your mouth by tongue control and gravity with some help from your palate and tongue to form some suction denture. However, many fun activities may cause your dentures to dislodge easier than you may think. Activities such as:
- Water skiing
- Diving
- Horseback riding
- Mountain biking and/or biking on rough terrain
- Jet Skiing
- Surfing
- Rock Climbing
- Riding your motorcycle
- Boating
If you plan to wear your dentures during any type of rigorous activities (especially water sports) the use of a good denture adhesive will help hold your dentures in place and minimize the chance of them falling out of your mouth and getting lost or broken. Ask your Denturist which adhesives would work best for you in these situations.
- Bring your Spare Set of Dentures with You
If you have the option of bringing your old set of dentures with you on your trip please do! If your current dentures get lost or broken then you can easily pop in your old set and continue your journey without having to take time out of your trip to find someone to fix them. Please do not try to repair them on your own, doing so will make it harder for them to be repaired by professionals.
- Schedule a Consultation with your Denturist
Before you set off on any big adventures this Summer be sure to make an appointment with your Denturist to ensure that your dentures are fitting properly. Keep in mind that dentures are required to be refit every 2 years and replaced every 5 years. If your dentures are in need of re-fitting or replacing be sure to plan to have this done well before your adventure begins so your Denturist has time to properly fit you and take care of any necessary adjustments.
If you have any other issue or concern regarding your denture care. You can contact with denturist in Airdrie at (403) 948-0954
